Window Cleaning in Autumn – Here at Ova8, we’ve got more pressing matters to focus on, as we reveal our top tips to keeping your equipment safe once the colder temperatures start to kick in.
First off, check the weather forecast for the following morning, and prepare for the unexpected. Make sure you’ve got gloves and thermals just in case there’s a cold snap!
Be as prepared and organised as possible to help your business run as smoothly as possible during the colder months.
Water will freeze in temperatures below zero. When it melts, it expands, potentially causing cracks especially hoses and filters.
If it’s forecast to be seriously chilly, bring anything wet into your home, including brushes or accessories. Ova8 carbon-fibre poles will not break or crack under freezing temperatures, however, the pole hose could become damaged and leak.

However, other methods, such as traditional window cleaning tools, may need a different approach when it’s cold. Make sure to not use hot water on cold windows, and avoid using ladders if it’s wet and cold, as it will be too slippy and dangerous.
If there’s a cold snap forecast, try parking your van undercover – in a garage, for example – to minimise any risk. This isn’t necessary for any window cleaner using Ova8 poles, but if your other brand waterfed or telescopic poles are old and well-used, you may need to bring them inside to prevent them from freezing or cracking.
Despite the popular opinion that “you don’t need to clean windows when it’s raining”, it’s still an essential service. Rainwater isn’t ‘clean’ and will still leave residue, marks, and dirt on your windows.
While autumn is traditionally a rainier season, try and be as prepared as possible. Warn customers of any potential rainy weather, and schedule alternative dates for them when the forecast is better.
Invest in a fleece-lined hat and some decent gloves – preferably waterproof – and wrap up warm – nobody wants to be a shivering window cleaner!
